Antenna Hack Offers Free TV as Streaming Costs Soar

As streaming service subscription costs continue to rise, consumers are exploring more economical alternatives for television viewing. One increasingly popular solution involves using traditional TV antennas, which can provide access to numerous free channels for a one-time purchase price.

Tyler Kleinle, a content creator known on YouTube as "Antenna Man," highlighted the overlooked benefits of antennas. "People kind of downplay antennas, but they’re insanely underrated," Kleinle told KTLA. He explained that an antenna, costing as little as $15, offers free channels indefinitely, bypassing issues such as buffering, reduced picture quality, and channel blackouts that can affect streaming and cable services.

Kleinle's YouTube channel offers guidance on selecting and using TV antennas. He advises that indoor antennas are generally sufficient for viewers located within 30 miles of broadcast towers. For those living farther away, an outdoor antenna may be necessary.

"It’s very important to buy an antenna that not only looks like an antenna, but it’s of a decent size. It doesn’t have to be massive," Kleinle stated. He recommends established brands such as RCA, Antennas Direct, ClearStream, Channel Master, Winegard, and Phillips. He also pointed to the Channel Master FLATenna, a $35 option that can be mounted on a wall.

A Philips indoor TV antenna, for example, costs around $15. This price is significantly lower than recent price increases for major streaming platforms. In August, Peacock raised its ad-free subscription from $10.99 to $12.99, and Apple TV+ increased its monthly fee from $12.99 to $14.99.

Netflix also saw price adjustments in March, with its standard plan including ads rising to $8.99, the ad-free standard version increasing to $19.99, and the premium tier reaching $26.99 per month. These price hikes may be impacting subscriber numbers, as Netflix recently reported its slowest revenue growth in years.

By using an antenna, viewers can access major local broadcast networks, ensuring they do not miss popular programming, including live sports like football.
