Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 opens with Captain Christopher Pike, played by Anson Mount, embracing a moment of leisure on an alien world alongside his crewmates La’An Noonien-Singh and Dr. Joseph M’Benga. This idyllic scene comes shortly after the devastating events of the previous season, which concluded with Captain Marie Batel's self-sacrifice to trap the villainous Vezda.

Mount, who has portrayed Pike since his debut on Star Trek: Discovery, reflected on the character's evolution and the profound impact of his relationships. He noted that the franchise's faith in him has provided the courage to build a family, stating, "This franchise having enough faith in me to give me a job that kind of handed me the wherewithal and the courage to have a family, because that’s not a given as an actor." He also shared that the recent horseback riding sequence for the season premiere was filmed in a quarry outside of Toronto, a location he found enjoyable due to his experience working with horses on the series 'Hell on Wheels.'

The premiere episode also features Saffron Burrows as a Martian commander. During a poignant moment, Pike's use of the word "alone" is translated as "widower," a realization that visibly affects him. Mount described Burrows as an incredible and fun colleague, praising her ability to ground her character amidst alien features and costuming.

Pike continues to grapple with the grief of losing Captain Batel, who in an alternate timeline showed him a potential life they could have shared. Mount explained that Pike is seeking to honor her memory and the interconnected fates of his crew while coping with his own destiny. He indicated that Pike's arc this season will explore whether his intense work ethic is a form of distraction and if he is holding back those around him.

With the upcoming fifth season being the series' last, Mount acknowledged the difficulty in crafting a satisfying conclusion. "One of the hardest things to do in television is to end a series because everybody has an idea of what that should look like and so you’re going to disappoint 99.99% of people, but you have to choose a path and go down it and I thought we chose a pretty good one I’m very excited to share with people," he said.

Mount confirmed that production on the series has concluded. He expressed his affection for the crew, calling them "an absolutely incredible group of professionals who really cared about the story, every one of them." He also addressed the absence from the dinosaur-filled away mission in the premiere, humorously stating, "My friend, I’m 53 with two young children. I’ll take a break whenever I can get it."

Reflecting on his nearly decade-long involvement with the Star Trek franchise, Mount called it "a tremendous honor, one of the biggest honors of my career and one of the finest jobs in my career, maybe the finest." While he remains open to future possibilities, he emphasized the importance of not having expectations and never saying never in the entertainment industry.
