Another Trump Loyalist Departs DOJ Probe
Kurt Olsen, who was assigned to a conspiracy probe in Florida, has resigned from the Justice Department.
Another Trump loyalist involved in a controversial Justice Department probe into individuals who investigated former President Donald Trump has resigned. Kurt Olsen, who was assigned to the "grand conspiracy" probe in Southern Florida earlier this year, is no longer with the Justice Department, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Olsen's departure follows that of Joe diGenova, another Trump ally who had been dispatched to help lead the probe. DiGenova announced his departure weeks prior, suggesting he felt pressured by DOJ leadership to bring charges without supporting evidence.
Olsen reportedly had no prior prosecutorial experience and was involved in litigation challenging the results of the 2020 election. Efforts to reach Olsen for comment were unsuccessful. A DOJ spokesperson declined to comment.
Sources also indicated that other line prosecutors on the investigation have left the U.S. attorney's office in South Florida. However, one source clarified that these officials were temporarily assigned and their terms had expired.
The conspiracy probe reportedly examines intelligence officials and others who investigated Trump and his associates from his 2016 presidential campaign through post-presidency criminal investigations. Trump has denied all charges related to these matters.
The premise of the investigation, which reportedly aims to charge Trump's opponents under a civil rights statute concerning "deprivation of rights under color of law," has drawn skepticism from current and former federal prosecutors, according to sources. Several individuals who are subjects of the investigation, including former CIA Director John Brennan, have reportedly been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in South Florida in recent weeks.
