Anne Robinson Reflects on Regret Over Losing Custody Amid Alcohol Battle

Anne Robinson, the 81-year-old presenter known for "The Weakest Link," has spoken about the profound remorse she experienced after losing custody of her daughter, Emma Wilson, due to her struggles with alcoholism.

Robinson lost custody of her then two-year-old daughter in 1973, when a court ruled her an unfit mother because of her drinking. She described this period as "the most shameful thing of my life," admitting that the shame was "heavy."

In an interview on Saga's "Experience is Everything" podcast, Robinson explained that she made the decision to stop drinking, a process that took a couple of years. She stated that after abstaining from alcohol, she slowly began to rebuild her relationship with her daughter. "Slowly she was mine again, but it was quite a tough start… we had to start again when she was five or six, to really build a relationship which is untouchable now and has been for years and years and years," she shared.

Robinson's daughter, Emma, who is now a television and radio producer, has a close relationship with her mother. The two even lived together during the COVID-19 lockdown. Robinson recently relocated from her countryside home in the Cotswolds to an apartment in London, closer to Emma and her family. This move was prompted by her declining eyesight, which has made driving impossible.

She explained her decision to move, stating, "I just know that it will be sadder if they take me out of here in an ambulance." She added, "I don't want Emma sitting at lunch saying to someone, as people say to me, 'Oh my mother, you know she's in Somerset and now the carer's gone off sick – I'm having to drive for an hour and a half when there's a crisis.'"

Previously, Robinson left Channel 4's "Countdown" in 2022 after just one year. Reports at the time suggested on-set friction with co-hosts Rachel Riley and Susie Dent, along with a pay dispute. Robinson later addressed these rumors, denying a significant rift but acknowledging that she had insisted on Riley and Dent's microphones being switched off, preferring a quiet studio environment. She explained that while she was offered a pay raise, she chose not to join Channel 4's payroll, leading to her departure.
