Actress Anna Paquin has spoken out about the perceived dark side of child stardom, suggesting a connection between early fame and difficult life outcomes. Her comments come in the wake of the recent deaths of former child stars Hayden Panettiere, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Daveigh Chase.

Paquin, who achieved Oscar recognition at age 11 for her role in "The Piano," posted a message on Instagram Friday. In it, she honored Panettiere, Trachtenberg, and Chase, stating that "it’s not a coincidence that so many former, specifically pre-sexualized female, child ‘stars’ have profoundly sad lives and untimely ends." She added that the "systems" designed to protect child actors were not as effective as they should have been.

Paquin described herself, Panettiere, Trachtenberg, and Chase as belonging to a "strange, small club." She extended an invitation to other former child stars to reach out if they require assistance, emphasizing their worthiness of support regardless of how the industry may have made them feel. "You are worthy of support, no matter how our industry made us feel," Paquin wrote. "I believe you, and I will stand by your side."

Panettiere died on August 16 in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 36. Her family confirmed her passing, and 911 dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Michelle Trachtenberg died on February 26, 2025, at age 39. She was found "unconscious and unresponsive" in her New York apartment and pronounced dead at the scene. The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined her death was due to complications of diabetes mellitus, ruling the manner of death as natural.

Daveigh Chase died on June 16 at age 35. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as her primary cause of death. Her boyfriend had previously stated she was battling meningitis and serious blood infections that led to sepsis.

Alexa PenaVega, another former child star known for her roles on the Disney Channel and in the "Spy Kids" franchise, also paid tribute to the late actresses following Panettiere's death. PenaVega expressed her grief, noting that these were not just names from her childhood but girls she grew up with in an industry that was "exciting and also incredibly hard."

"We were kids navigating something so big, and not everyone had the foundation or the support they deserved," PenaVega wrote on Instagram. "Today, I’m grieving and holding their families close in my prayers and thinking of everyone still fighting battles we can’t see."

Paquin concluded her message by urging solidarity among former child stars: "You aren’t alone. Let’s have each other’s backs. It might make public disclosure less terrifying.”
