Anna Gunn Honors "Breaking Bad" Co-Star RJ Mitte After His Death

Anna Gunn, who portrayed the mother of RJ Mitte's character on the acclaimed series "Breaking Bad," has shared a heartfelt tribute to the late actor following his death by suicide at age 34. Mitte's passing was confirmed by his representative, who noted his significant impact as an actor, philanthropist, and advocate for disability rights.

Gunn reflected on her first meeting with Mitte when he was 14, describing him as possessing a "depth and complexity" unusual for his age. She characterized him as "gentle and bold, exceedingly kind, and wickedly funny," adding that he was "a bit rebellious (like any teenager) yet eager to learn and hone his craft."

The actress highlighted Mitte's determination to use his cerebral palsy diagnosis not as a limitation but as an opportunity to educate and inspire through his portrayal of Walter "Flynn" White Jr. on "Breaking Bad." Gunn expressed gratitude that the entire cast felt fortunate to have had Mitte's presence illuminate their lives for so many years.

"How lucky I was to play his TV mom, to watch him evolve and expand as an actor and human being as the seasons went by, and for all the years after as he continued to serve his community with tireless advocacy and philanthropic work," Gunn stated. "I was so proud of him; we all were."

She continued, "There truly are no words to express the heartbreak of a loss this profound, the loss of a beautiful young man who had such an impact upon this world, with still so much ahead of him." Gunn also shared that she will cherish the "quiet, personal moments" and "belly-aching laughter and silliness" she shared with her "beloved TV son," alongside moments of "care and deep love."

Mitte's representative confirmed that the actor died by suicide in Texas. An autopsy is pending, with initial reports indicating no signs of foul play. The representative's statement emphasized Mitte's role as a passionate disability rights advocate, drawing from his personal experience with cerebral palsy to authentically portray his character and build a platform for disability awareness and inclusion.

Beyond his acting career, Mitte was recognized as a proud ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's. He also led the Mitte Foundation, which supported philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while actively working to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for individuals with disabilities. The family and close friends have requested privacy during this difficult time.
