Police have launched a murder inquiry into the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, aged 78. A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities were called to Widdecombe's home in Haytor, Dartmoor, on Thursday morning after an ambulance crew discovered her with serious injuries.
Devon and Cornwall Police stated that while counter-terrorism units were consulted as a precaution, the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related or politically motivated. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman appealed to the public for information and urged against speculation, particularly on social media, to avoid causing distress to Widdecombe's family and friends.
News of Widdecombe's death was announced by her management on Friday morning, with initial reports suggesting natural causes. Forensic officers are currently examining the property, which has been cordoned off.
Fellow politicians and public figures have shared tributes to the former MP, known for her outspoken views and lengthy political career. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called the circumstances "extremely distressing," while Sir Keir Starmer described the news of a murder investigation as "really shocking."
Ashley James, who appeared with Widdecombe on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018, acknowledged the politician's "deplorable" beliefs, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ rights, which she stated "caused real harm." However, James also recounted how Widdecombe had a "profound impact" on her by encouraging her to have more conviction in her own beliefs and to worry less about pleasing others. James expressed devastation at the news and sent condolences to Widdecombe's loved ones.
Others who knew Widdecombe from her media appearances also shared memories. Anton Du Beke, her dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing, called her a "firm friend" and expressed his devastation. Piers Morgan described her as a "charismatic, combative gem" and a "wonderfully no-nonsense, straight-talking, highly-opinionated British battle-axe." Jeremy Vine remembered her as a "formidable politician" with a "great sense of humour," noting her willingness to express her views without fear. Amanda Barrie, a fellow Celebrity Big Brother contestant, recalled their contrasting viewpoints but also Widdecombe's underlying kindness.
Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP for Maidstone and later for the South West Devon constituency from 1987 to 2015. She was known for her strong stances on social issues and was a prominent figure in public life, including appearances on "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Celebrity Big Brother." She remained an active commentator, recently voicing support for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
