Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative Member of Parliament and a prominent political commentator, has died at the age of 78. Her death was announced on Friday.

Widdecombe, who served as an MP for over two decades before transitioning to roles in the Brexit Party and later Reform UK, was known for her unyielding stance on issues such as same-sex marriage, abortion, and climate change. Despite her public career, she was notably private about her personal life, rarely engaging in discussions about her relationships.

She often described herself as content with her own company and previously stated that "TV and sex are the two things I can do without." Widdecombe expressed that she had only one serious relationship during her time at Oxford University and never met a partner she considered 'Mr. Right.' This personal stance led to frequent speculation, with the politician once threatening legal action against a journalist who questioned her virginity and admonishing broadcaster Louis Theroux for what she deemed 'impertinent' questions on the subject.

Widdecombe's public life extended beyond politics, including appearances on television shows like "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Celebrity Big Brother." Her time on "Strictly Come Dancing" in 2010 saw her become an unexpected favorite, with parliamentary colleagues even saluting her and dance partner Anton Du Beke for providing entertainment.

Her conservative values were a consistent theme throughout her life. She famously converted from the Church of England to Roman Catholicism in 1993 after the former decided to ordain women priests. In a demonstration of her personal convictions, Widdecombe included a clause in her "Strictly Come Dancing" contract stipulating that she would not perform overtly sexual moves and would wear modest attire.

Tributes poured in following the announcement of her death. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage remembered her as a "remarkable, principled woman," while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called her a "true servant of her constituents." Anton Du Beke recalled her as a "fun," "upbeat," and "positive" friend.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Widdecombe's death. Authorities stated that there is no current information to suggest the crime was politically motivated or terror-related. Forensic investigations into the circumstances of her death are ongoing at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor.
