A murder investigation has been launched into the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe after police were called to her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, where she was found with serious injuries. A suspect, a 26-year-old white British man, has been arrested in Newton Abbot and remains in police custody.

Devon and Cornwall Police stated that while counter-terrorism policing was consulted, the incident is not being treated as terrorism and there is no information to suggest it was politically motivated. Forensic officers are examining Widdecombe's property, which has been cordoned off.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman appealed for anyone with information to come forward and urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances, particularly on social media, due to the distress it could cause to Widdecombe's family and friends.

News of the death and the subsequent murder probe prompted tributes from public figures who knew Widdecombe. Ashley James, a co-star from Celebrity Big Brother, described Widdecombe's political views as "deplorable" and acknowledged that many of her beliefs "caused real harm." However, James also noted that Widdecombe had a "profound impact" on her, encouraging her to "care less what people thought and have conviction in her own beliefs."

Widdecombe, a prominent figure in British politics known for her no-nonsense approach, also appeared on television shows and participated in "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Celebrity Big Brother." Her agents confirmed her death, extending condolences to her family and friends.

Those who knew her remembered her for her strong opinions and public persona. Piers Morgan called her a "charismatic, combative gem," while Jeremy Vine highlighted her formidable nature and sense of humor. Amanda Barrie, who starred with Widdecombe on Celebrity Big Brother, described them as "complete opposites" but admitted to adoring her, finding a kind person beneath her public facade.

Ann Widdecombe, aged 78, was a long-serving Member of Parliament and a consistent voice on moral and social issues. She never married and had no children.
