Animals at UK Zoo Enjoy Halloween Pumpkins as Enrichment Activity
Whipsnade Zoo's inhabitants, from rhinos to lemurs, received carved pumpkins filled with seasonal treats as part of their enrichment programs.
Animals at Whipsnade Zoo in the United Kingdom embraced the Halloween spirit by consuming pumpkins and seasonal treats. The zoo's zookeepers provided carved squashes packed with food to various animals as a form of enrichment, encouraging them to use their natural instincts.
A greater one-horned rhino, ring-tailed and black lemurs, and Sulawesi crested macaques were among the participants. Ring-tailed lemurs Delilah and Diego, along with black lemurs Camila and Kahagi, used their sense of smell to locate sweetcorn and peppers hidden within the Halloween-themed offerings.
The zoo's Sulawesi crested macaques utilized their nimble hands to search through the pumpkins for seeds and pulses. Meanwhile, the greater one-horned rhino, Hugo, appeared indifferent to the festive decorations as he explored the scented treats before consuming a large meal of hay and cabbage.
Matthew Webb, Head of Zoological Operations at Whipsnade Zoo, highlighted the ongoing efforts of zookeepers to devise innovative enrichment activities. "Our zookeepers spend the whole year coming up with inventive new ways to encourage our animals' instincts, including following scent trails and foraging to find food," Webb stated. "As everyone counts down to Halloween, our zookeepers used seasonal squashes to make sure the animals don't miss out on any of the fun - and put their incredible natural skills to the test!"
Zookeepers regularly employ food puzzles, scent trails, and other engaging activities to stimulate the animals' natural behaviors and foraging skills.
