A Los Angeles-based animal welfare organization has filed a lawsuit against the city, Mayor Karen Bass, the City Council, LA Animal Services, and the LAPD, alleging a failure to address animal abuse and prevent the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable dogs.
According to the lawsuit, filed by the Stand Up for Pits Foundation after three years of unsuccessful efforts to work with city officials, the city is perpetuating a "powerful false 'no kill' narrative" that misleads the public into believing shelters are safe havens. The charity asserts that animals are still killed daily in LA shelters due to a lack of affordable spay and neuter services, insufficient enforcement of existing laws, and a failure to educate the public.
Rebecca Corry, founder and executive director of the Stand Up for Pits Foundation, stated that the issue is not a lack of resources but a "leadership problem." She contends that Mayor Bass has the authority to appoint and remove the general manager of LA Animal Services and that the City Council also bears responsibility. Corry also pointed to local nonprofits that she claims have a financial incentive to maintain the status quo rather than solve the underlying problems.
The lawsuit alleges that city officials have attempted to dismiss the case multiple times, using taxpayer funds to fight a charity that aims to save animals. The foundation argues that such actions hinder efforts to address the crisis and allow the continued euthanasia of animals.
"What saves lives is prevention. What saves lives is education. What saves lives is affordable spay and neuter. What saves lives is enforcing the laws while telling people the truth," Corry stated. She criticized the city's approach, saying LA treats dogs as "kennel numbers, statistics, and animal ID numbers" rather than sentient beings.
The organization is advocating for compassionate and effective leadership in city shelters, emphasizing that accountability and prioritizing prevention are crucial for real change. The lawsuit aims to compel the city to address the crisis and stop the killing of adoptable animals, which Corry described as "diabolical."
