Animal Charity Celebrates Rehoming Kittens Found Abandoned
Eight kittens, named after alcoholic beverages, have found new homes after being discovered in bin bags.
An animal rescue charity is celebrating the successful rehoming of eight kittens who were found abandoned in bin bags. The litter, consisting of black-and-white kittens, were discovered on a street in Grimsby when they were only eight weeks old.
Members of the public found the kittens in a plastic rubbish bag and took them to a local animal shelter, Blue Cross. After undergoing routine health checks, the kittens were given names inspired by alcoholic beverages, including Peroni, Miguel, Cruzcampo, Guinness, Madri, Bud, Stella, and Moretti.
The kittens were subsequently transferred to a rehoming center in Oxfordshire, where all eight have now found new families. This news comes as Blue Cross reports a 15 percent increase in unwanted or abandoned kittens compared to the previous year.
Hannah Wiltshire, the center manager at Blue Cross's rehoming center, suggested that the cost-of-living crisis could be a contributing factor to the rise in abandoned animals. She noted that some owners might forgo neutering to avoid veterinary costs, inadvertently leading to unexpected litters they are unprepared to care for. Another possibility is that owners breed cats for kittens but face a lack of demand, resulting in abandonment when homes cannot be found.
"It is heartbreaking to think that so many unwanted kittens are being left alone, often when they are far too young to fend for themselves," Wiltshire stated. "These eight kittens were incredibly lucky to be found and brought to us. They have now got the happy ending every kitten deserves, but there are many more out there who may not be so fortunate."
