Anika Wells' Adelaide Trip Meeting Unrecorded in Minister's Diary
Questions arise as a meeting cited by Communications Minister Anika Wells to justify a taxpayer-funded trip to Adelaide is not explicitly listed in the diary of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton.
A key meeting that Communications Minister Anika Wells cited to justify an overnight stay in Adelaide following a taxpayer-funded trip was not recorded in the ministerial diary of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton. Wells had informed the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA) that she held a "sideline meeting" with Picton at his wife Connie Blefari's birthday party in June 2025.
Wells stated the meeting concluded at 7:45 p.m., which IPEA accepted as grounds for her to remain in Adelaide overnight before returning to Brisbane. However, excerpts from Picton's ministerial diary, obtained via Freedom of Information (FOI) laws, do not specifically document a meeting with Wells. The diary indicates the period from 5 p.m. onwards was marked as "personal affairs" and does not name Wells.
Records show Wells traveled from Brisbane to Adelaide on June 6, 2025, and returned on June 8. During this trip, she visited a school and met with Trade Minister Don Farrell. Wells also told IPEA that she was scheduled to meet Picton on June 7, prior to attending Blefari's birthday celebration later that evening. In her submission to IPEA, Wells explained that the planned daytime meeting was delayed due to extended discussions with Farrell, leading to the meeting taking place during the private event.
Despite Wells' account, the FOI documents do not explicitly reference this meeting. An entry beginning at 3 p.m. on the day in question is marked as personal and has been redacted. Picton's diary also indicates his only publicly listed official engagement that day was a media appearance concerning ambulance ramping at the new Women's and Children's Hospital.
However, both Wells and Picton have denied that the absence of the "sideline" meeting in the released diary undermines Wells' account. A spokesperson for the South Australian government stated that the meeting did occur and that the released documents did not present the complete picture. The spokesperson explained it is "standard practice" to remove names from personal diary entries released under FOI laws, and that Wells' name was redacted for privacy. "Minister Wells' Adelaide travel including her meeting with Minister Picton was clearly detailed in the Federal IPEA report in May," the spokesperson said. "Exactly as Minister Wells informed IPEA, the Ministers were unable to meet during the day and met during a function that evening." The spokesperson further added that personal details, including names, addresses, and phone numbers, are routinely omitted from documents released under South Australia's FOI laws.
A spokeswoman for Wells also defended the minister's account, stating that "nothing had changed" from her previous comments to IPEA. "As outlined in the IPEA report, the Ministers were due to meet at this time," she said.
This situation follows previous scrutiny of Wells' travel expenses. Late last year, it was revealed that over $100,000 had been spent on flights for her and a staff member to attend a United Nations event in New York, intended to promote the federal government's social media ban for individuals under 16. This controversy led to a broader review of Wells' use of official travel and family reunion entitlements, prompting her to refer herself to IPEA for an audit. The audit identified $8,092.89 in inappropriate travel and hire-car claims, including $5,513 for family flights taken before her 2022 swearing-in and $726 for her husband's flight home after the 2025 AFL Grand Final. Including a 25% penalty loading of $2,023.22, the total repayment amount exceeded $10,000.
