Angry Neighbors Aid Fugitives' Escape from Border Patrol in New York Standoff
A tense seven-hour confrontation on a rooftop in Oswego, New York, ended with onlookers assisting individuals sought by Border Patrol in evading capture.

A group of approximately 50 residents gathered in Oswego, New York, on Wednesday, intervening as Border Patrol agents attempted to apprehend individuals on a rooftop. The situation escalated over a seven-hour standoff, culminating in what appeared to be the successful escape of the fugitives with the assistance of onlookers.
Footage from the scene shows a crowd chanting "Let them go!" as agents engaged with the men on the roof. In one instance, several residents appeared to help a fugitive down from the roof as he was on a ledge. Once on the ground, other neighbors reportedly ushered the individual toward a waiting vehicle.
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. when the two men reportedly drove by Charles E. Riley Elementary School, exited their vehicle, and climbed scaffolding to reach the roof of a nearby house. Border Patrol held a federal warrant for their arrest, though the specific charges were not immediately clear.
During the standoff, the Oswego City School District placed Charles E. Riley Elementary School on a lockout as a precautionary measure due to the law enforcement activity in the vicinity. The lockout was later lifted, and students were dismissed safely.
Members of the crowd also reportedly accosted members of the media present at the scene. Onlookers allegedly threw clothing over a camera lens belonging to a CNYCentral reporter and demanded that recording cease.
