Angry Anderson, Rocker Who Provided 'Neighbours' Wedding Soundtrack, Dies at 79

Gary Anderson, the Australian rock musician better known as Angry Anderson, has died at the age of 79. Anderson fronted the rock band Rose Tattoo from 1976 and later achieved global recognition for his solo hit "Suddenly."

The song "Suddenly" became indelibly linked to the Australian television soap opera "Neighbours" when it was featured prominently in the 1988 wedding episode of characters Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell, portrayed by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue. The broadcast was watched by an estimated 20 million viewers in the United Kingdom alone.

Anderson had experienced a cardiac arrest last month while on Rose Tattoo's farewell tour in Europe. He received hospital treatment before returning to Australia, leading the band to cancel nine scheduled live performances. A joint statement from Anderson's family and Rose Tattoo described him as a "devoted father, and much-loved bandmate" whose loss would be deeply felt.

Born in Melbourne in 1947, Anderson and Rose Tattoo gained recognition within Australia's rock scene, releasing their debut album in 1978. Following the band's initial disbandment, Anderson pursued a solo career, co-writing and releasing "Suddenly" in 1987. The song reached the top three in both Australia and the UK, notably being held off the number one spot in his home country by Minogue's own debut single, "Locomotion."

Anderson released two solo albums before Rose Tattoo reunited in 1993 to support Guns N' Roses on their Australian tour. The band later embarked on their own tour in 1998 and was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2006.

Beyond his music career, Anderson was recognized for his community service and advocacy for youth. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for his contributions, including charity work. He also performed as Herod in an Australian production of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
