Angelina Jolie is reportedly supportive of her youngest daughter Vivienne's decision to legally drop Brad Pitt's last name, with a source close to the actress telling People that Jolie desires "everyone to heal."
Vivienne, 18, filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to change her legal name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. The petition lists the reason for the change as "personal," and a court hearing is scheduled for November 2.
This move follows similar actions by her older siblings. In May 2024, Vivienne dropped her father's surname in the Playbill for the Broadway production of "The Outsiders," where she served as a producer alongside her mother. She was pictured with her mother in June 2024.
The court documents state that the petition is part of an ongoing effort by Vivienne to distance herself from the Pitt name. Vivienne, born in 2008, is the youngest of Jolie and Pitt's six children.
Her name change request comes days after older siblings Zahara, 21, and Maddox, 24, also published notices of their intent to drop Pitt from their last names. Zahara's notice appeared in the Los Angeles Daily Journal after she filed a petition to change her name to Zahara Marley Jolie. Maddox also filed to drop the actor's last name in late May.
Zahara publicly adopted the name Zahara Marley Jolie during her graduation ceremony from Spelman College. Her father reportedly did not attend the event.
Jolie and Pitt's other daughter, Shiloh, 20, legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie last year. Shiloh's lawyer previously stated the decision was "independent and significant" and followed "painful events."
Vivienne's twin brother, Knox, is the only sibling who has not yet formally dropped the actor's surname. Pitt's relationship with his son Pax, 22, is also described as strained, though it is unclear if he has taken steps to drop the Pitt name. Pax previously referred to his father as a "world-class a**hole" and accused him of making his younger siblings "tremble in fear."
A source close to Jolie told the Daily Mail that Pitt believes Jolie's role in the unfolding situation is an "ultimate betrayal" and views the rift with his children as "deeply painful." However, sources defending Pitt have insisted he is not an absent father and desires a relationship with his children. They also claim that Pitt "holds out hope that the others will one day come around. Time heals wounds."
Pitt and Jolie, once considered Hollywood's "It" couple, welcomed six children together before their divorce was finalized in 2024 after an eight-year legal battle. The couple met on the set of the 2005 film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
Pitt has since begun dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, 33.
Their marriage ended following a 2016 incident involving abuse allegations, which Pitt has denied. He was not charged with a crime, and the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services cleared him of physical abuse allegations.
The family divide was further highlighted when Pitt's mother, Jane Etta Pitt, died last year. Sources revealed at the time that the children had been kept from their paternal grandparents for approximately nine years.
