Angela Rayner Reveals Herself as 'Petrolhead' Capable of Full Car Service

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has revealed a hidden mechanical aptitude, describing herself as a 'petrolhead' capable of performing a full car service and MOT.

Rayner, 46, shared her automotive skills in a recent interview with Sky News, stating that fixing cars was a passion of hers. She detailed her experience with various mechanical tasks, including changing clutches, brake pads, and spark plugs. Rayner also humorously mentioned once fashioning a rocker box gasket from a cornflake box.

She noted that modern cars are more challenging to repair due to their complex electronics, requiring specialized diagnostic tools. "It's a lot harder now, you have to plug them in," she commented.

Rayner's comments on her mechanical abilities came as she discussed government plans to reform the benefits system to encourage more young people into employment. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she expressed support for initiatives aimed at creating opportunities, stating that over a million children without prospects in training or employment is unacceptable.

When questioned about potential benefit cuts, Rayner emphasized the need to wait for the publication of Alan Milburn's review before making further comments. She reiterated the government's focus on ensuring support for individuals seeking employment, citing the increased availability of apprenticeships.
