Angela Rayner Reveals Herself a 'Petrolhead' with Automotive Repair Skills
The UK's Housing Secretary shares her surprising mechanical aptitude, from changing clutches to performing full services.
Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has revealed a surprising mechanical skillset, describing herself as a "petrolhead" capable of performing a full car service, changing a clutch, and even conducting MOT tests.
Rayner, who grew up in a working-class area of Manchester, shared her automotive expertise in a television interview. She told Sky News that fixing cars "was a thing of mine" when she was younger, detailing her ability to handle tasks such as changing points, condensers, brake pads, and brake shoes. She also humorously noted that she once cut a rocker box gasket out of a cornflake box. However, she acknowledged that modern vehicles are more complex to repair, requiring diagnostic plug-ins.
Rayner's comments on her mechanical abilities came as she discussed government plans to reform the benefits system to encourage more young people into employment. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she expressed support for initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for young people, stating that the country cannot accept over a million children without prospects for training or employment.
When asked about potential benefit cuts suggested in a review, Rayner emphasized the importance of creating employment opportunities. She highlighted that the government is already working to increase the availability of apprenticeships. Rayner indicated a preference for waiting for the full report's publication before offering further comment, stating that the government's current focus is on ensuring support for individuals entering the workforce.
