Andy Robertson Hailed as Inspiration Ahead of 100th Scotland Cap

Scotland captain Andy Robertson is set to earn his 100th cap when his team faces North Macedonia in a Nations League clash. His teammate John McGinn and Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli have both lauded Robertson's commitment and inspirational qualities.

Robertson will become only the second player in Scottish football history to reach a century of appearances, following Sir Kenny Dalglish, who holds the record with 102 caps. Given Robertson's fitness and continued form, he is expected to surpass Dalglish's record in the near future.

McGinn highlighted Robertson's unwavering dedication, noting his availability for Scotland even when managing a demanding club schedule at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. "The commitment, the desire to always be available even when he was competing at the top of the European game, the top of the English game," McGinn stated. He added that Robertson often played for Scotland even when not fully fit, deserving of the accolades he is now receiving.

Robertson's journey to the top is also seen as a significant inspiration. Having been released by Celtic as a teenager and subsequently playing part-time football with Queen's Park, his rise to becoming a world-class left-back at Liverpool serves as a powerful example for young players facing rejection.

"He is the shining example that that's just not the case, and it's been an absolute honour to stand beside him during this," McGinn said of his captain.

Pocognoli echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Robertson's importance both on and off the pitch. "He is very important in all the process that we are building not only on the pitch, but also off the pitch," the head coach commented. "He is a great professional, a great person, and he inspires a lot of players in the group, but also many young players."

Pocognoli also recognized Robertson's pride in representing Scotland and his role in fostering connections between the coaching staff and players. "He is really important for all of us," Pocognoli added. "I know Scotland is one of his main targets at this time in his career. I hope we can extend his number of games and I think we will."

The match against North Macedonia is particularly important as Scotland seeks its first win under Pocognoli. Following a draw with Slovenia and a defeat to Switzerland, Scotland is under pressure to perform.

"We just need to stay calm and not overthink things, especially the players. We have to go to North Macedonia and start from zero and try to do better than what we did against Switzerland," Pocognoli stated. "I think we need to win if we want to step up the rankings. It is a tough place to go, but if we can combine performance and result, I will be happy."

Scotland is expected to be favored against a North Macedonian side that has lost its opening two games.
