Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday that Mia Bieniemy, the wife of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been removed from the intensive care unit following a shooting incident at their Ashburn, Virginia, home.
Mia Bieniemy sustained multiple gunshot wounds but is now in stable condition and recovering. Eric Bieniemy has remained with his wife throughout her hospitalization.
"She's doing great. She's doing better and great from where she was," Reid told reporters. "Out of the ICU unit, happy about that. EB is still with her, that part's important."
The incident led to the arrest of the couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy. He faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator for the current season after previous coaching stints with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA's football program. During his previous tenure with the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy was part of an offensive unit that became a league standout, contributing to two Super Bowl victories.
