Andy Carroll Details Traumatic Sexual Assault in New Memoir

Footballer Andy Carroll has disclosed that he was sexually assaulted several years ago, an experience he describes as "traumatic" and unforgettable. Carroll, 37, revealed this in his new book, "Owning It," stating that he decided to include the account only at the last minute after extensive discussions with his publisher and girlfriend, Lou Teasdale.

"I was sexually assaulted, there I said it," Carroll wrote in the book. "Scary to even think about and only a few people knew about it before now." He explained that the decision to share the experience was made with the hope that speaking publicly about the assault could assist others.

Carroll, who played for England between 2010 and 2012, and previously played for clubs including Newcastle and Liverpool, now plays for National League South club Dagenham & Redbridge and serves as assistant manager. He reflected on how the event has shaped him, stating, "Scary to talk about but it's made the person I am today as much as any of the good stuff."

The book also touches upon Carroll's relationship with Lou Teasdale and his past struggles with alcohol. He recounts how his substantial salary increase as a footballer led to increased spending on bars, strip clubs, and casinos, and how alcohol contributed to his troubles. Carroll also discusses his views on the culture within professional football, including aspects he later recognized as disrespectful.

In a separate legal matter, Carroll recently pleaded not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order. He is accused of repeatedly contacting his ex-wife, reality TV personality Billi Mucklow. His trial is scheduled for January. Carroll and Mucklow were together for 11 years, got engaged in 2014, married in 2022, and share three children, in addition to two other children from Carroll's previous relationship.
