Andy Burnham to Release Details of Manchester City Dealings Amid Backlash

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has committed to releasing all information regarding his past dealings with Manchester City, following a public backlash over comments he made in support of the club's owners. The club has been found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.

Burnham stated in an interview with the Rest is Politics podcast that he would "put out there" all his activities related to working with Manchester City's owners during his tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester. This decision comes after criticism, including a call from Kemi Badenoch, who urged him to publish "everything" concerning his work with the club.

Burnham differentiated between football-related issues and investment matters, suggesting that the two should not be conflated. He noted that most of his interactions were not recent, with one significant meeting occurring in 2021. He emphasized that the football charges are serious and must follow an independent process.

Manchester City was found to have arranged "sham" commercial deals between 2009 and 2018, where sponsors paid only a portion of the agreed fees, with the remainder funded by the club's owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The club has maintained its innocence and is appealing the verdict.

Downing Street previously clarified Burnham's stance, stating he acknowledged the seriousness of the judgment and that consequences should follow established wrongdoing. Despite the ongoing situation, Manchester City recently defeated Liverpool 3-0.

Shadow sports minister Louie French called for Burnham to disclose any meetings held since becoming Prime Minister and urged Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy to address questions. French stated that the Prime Minister must publish all contacts between his ministers and Manchester City since taking office, explain any inappropriate intervention, and that Lisa Nandy must fully answer related questions.

The Premier League case carries significant implications across various societal levels. The situation leaves the Premier League in a state of uncertainty, with Manchester City currently leading the table but potentially facing exclusion if the initial verdict is upheld. The details of Burnham's meetings with City's chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, are expected to be closely watched, amidst reports of rising diplomatic tension between Britain and Abu Dhabi over the matter.
