Marie-France van Heel, wife of newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham, made a public appearance alongside him at Downing Street as he commenced his premiership. Van Heel, 56, who is Dutch-born, has largely remained out of the public eye during her husband's political career, which began after they met at Cambridge University in the late 1980s. She joined Burnham as he traveled to Buckingham Palace to be formally invited to form a government by King Charles, and was present again as he delivered a speech at Downing Street.

Van Heel, known as Frankie, is a marketing executive with a substantial career of her own. She founded MVH Marketing after a stint at BSkyB and later served as chief strategy officer at the London-based agency Heavenly. Currently, she holds the position of chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, a company involved in Manchester's electric vehicle charging network. Burnham had previously distanced himself from decisions concerning Iduna due to potential conflicts of interest related to his wife's role.

Burnham has previously shared that his wife's initial reaction to his decision to seek a return to Westminster was not entirely enthusiastic, describing it as a "two-word answer" that required "some encouragement." However, she was present at his victory rally following his election win.

The couple met in 1989 at Cambridge University's Fitzwilliam College. Burnham, who was studying English, recalled meeting Van Heel, a social and political sciences student, when he was trying to impress first-year female students and discovered her fondness for the Manchester band The Smiths. They married in 2000.

Before her relationship with Burnham, Van Heel appeared on the ITV dating show "Blind Date" in 1992. She participated as a publicity stunt to further her aspirations of becoming a children's television presenter, a goal she later stated was part of her initial career plans. During her appearance, she selected Will Harris from Surrey, who has since pursued a career in marketing and expressed an interest in standing as a Conservative candidate for Parliament. Burnham had agreed to her television appearance but admitted to watching the episode with considerable anxiety. The program, which aired from 1985 to 2003, involved contestants choosing a date based on responses to questions. Harris later recounted a disappointing trip to Gibraltar following the show, attributing negative comments about Van Heel to production staff.
