Andy Burnham's carefully cultivated image as a "man of the people" is facing scrutiny following revelations about his expensive taste in clothing. The Prime Minister, who has adopted a more casual style of bomber jackets, T-shirts, and jeans to distance himself from traditional political attire, has been pictured wearing outfits that cost over £1,000.
These casual ensembles, worn during campaign events and public appearances, include items from the high-end Manchester tailor Private White VC. Among the revealed items are a Harrington jacket priced at £695, jeans for £295, and an £80 T-shirt. The tailor boasts a clientele including notable figures such as Sir David Beckham and actors Robert De Niro and Daniel Craig. Burnham has reportedly been a regular customer for over two years.
During the Makerfield by-election campaign, Burnham was seen in a video wearing these designer clothes while visiting constituents. He spoke in the video about his commitment to fighting for ordinary people and highlighted his past advocacy for the miners, Hillsborough families, and during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also stated that "Westminster doesn't work for people in this part of the world and communities like this across the UK."
Political opponents have criticized Burnham's wardrobe choices. Reform MP Lee Anderson commented that an £80 T-shirt costs more than the VAT cut on electricity bills per household announced the previous week. Tory MP Greg Stafford suggested that Burnham's image is as "carefully stitched up and contrived as his expensive tailored suits," questioning the affordability of a £1,500 suit for his constituents and speculating on his spending habits with public funds.
Some Labour MPs have also privately expressed surprise at the cost of Burnham's attire. James Eden, chief executive of Private White VC, confirmed that Burnham has purchased multiple items, including jeans and shirts, and had a bespoke suit made for his return to the Commons. A two-piece suit from the tailor starts at £1,500, with experts suggesting Burnham's suits could exceed £2,000. Eden noted that Burnham, who earns £174,000 as Prime Minister and previously earned £118,000 as mayor of Manchester, has always paid for his purchases.
A spokesperson for Downing Street declined to comment. However, a source close to the Prime Minister insisted that Burnham also wears brands like Fred Perry and Adidas, and has been known to shop at Marks & Spencer, suggesting a broader range of clothing purchases.
