Prime Minister Andy Burnham's arrival at 10 Downing Street was marked by a notable guest: former Everton footballer Peter Reid.
Reid, who played for Everton between 1982 and 1989, winning two First Division titles, the FA Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup, was part of Burnham's welcome party shortly after the new Prime Minister met King Charles at Buckingham Palace. Reid, dressed in a cream suit and sunglasses, described Burnham as a "big pal" of decades standing.
Burnham, a self-proclaimed Evertonian who has supported the team since he was three years old, has been open about his passion for football. His appearance with Reid, however, led to considerable surprise and discussion on social media.
"Why is Peter Reid at Downing Street waiting for Andy Burnham," one commenter asked, while another questioned, "Is that Peter Reid at Downing Street?" A third user wrote, "Peter Reid in Downing Street... Never thought I'd see, let alone write, this." Some users speculated humorously about Reid's potential role in government, with suggestions ranging from Chancellor of the Exchequer to "midfield enforcer in Parliament."
Also present was Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince, a significant donor to both the Labour and Green parties. Vince wore a t-shirt promoting plant-based diets with the message "chips are vegan."
Burnham's connection to football extends to his past involvement in a New Labour team alongside figures like Ed Balls and James Purnell, and occasional games during Labour conferences. He has also publicly addressed football-related issues, including suggesting a review of the ban on alcohol in the stands at UK football grounds. During a social media post from a rugby league match, Burnham questioned why alcohol was permitted at rugby games but not at Everton home matches.
Burnham's earliest memories of attending Everton matches date back to 1973, with specific recollections of games against Bristol City in 1976 and a match featuring Duncan McKenzie against Sunderland. Reid, who made 159 appearances for Everton, also played for clubs including QPR, Manchester City, and Bolton Wanderers. Post-playing career, he managed teams such as Leeds, Coventry City, and the Thailand national team.
