Prime Minister Andy Burnham was among the finishers of this year's Great North Run, completing the half marathon in under two hours. Burnham, who was raising money for the North East charity Changing Lives, expressed his satisfaction with the event and the spirit of the participants.
"You see the causes people are running for, all pulling together for the bigger cause," Burnham said. "It's just a day that reminds you how good this country is when it's together like this. This part of the world - it doesn't half shine on a day like this. The warmth of the people comes out - the people in the race with you, the people on the sidelines."
The Great North Run saw 63,000 participants take on the 13.1-mile course. Runners, as is tradition, donned a variety of costumes to support their fundraising efforts for various causes. Among the participants were individuals dressed as nuns, horses, and even a pair of ovaries.
Burnham had visited Changing Lives last month to launch a national initiative aimed at ending rough sleeping. The charity focuses on supporting individuals and families facing complex challenges.
