Andy Burnham Appears on Gogglebox for Stand Up To Cancer

Prime Minister Andy Burnham appeared on a special episode of Channel 4's Gogglebox for the Stand Up To Cancer charity campaign. Burnham, joined by Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotherham, watched and reacted to poignant cancer diagnosis stories from within Downing Street.

The program featured segments highlighting the experiences of individuals like Callum, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 15, and Shona, diagnosed with cervical cancer, alongside her husband Will, who received a bowel cancer diagnosis. Burnham expressed his emotional response, stating, "I just couldn't imagine" and calling the situations "devastating for that family."

He also noted the progress in cancer research, saying, "The only thing that does give some hope is there is so much incredible research going on, and some of the main cancers of years ago, there's been such big progress on them." However, he added, "But it's utter devastation isn't it, if you're that couple I don't know how you cope with that."

Other notable figures participating in the special included Stanley Tucci, whose wife Felicity Blunt commented on their shared experience with cancer, Paul Whitehouse, Joe Lycett, and the Sugababes. Lenny Rush and Paul Whitehouse also shared their reactions to the bravery of the families featured.

Burnham is the first Prime Minister to feature on Gogglebox. A teaser for the episode showed him and Rotherham, introduced as "good friends Andy and Steve," sharing snacks, with Burnham offering a selection of crisps and Twiglets.

This is not the first time a Labour leader has appeared on the show for charity; Jeremy Corbyn participated in a 2017 version. Other political figures who have previously appeared on Gogglebox include Stanley Johnson, father of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also appeared on a Gogglebox spin-off in 2014.

Stand Up To Cancer is a joint national fundraising campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. The Gogglebox special aired on Channel 4 on Friday evening.
