Manchester United has finalized a £50 million transfer for midfielder Andrey Santos, bringing the 22-year-old Brazilian to Old Trafford from Chelsea.

The move comes as Santos sought greater first-team opportunities, a desire exacerbated by Chelsea's crowded midfield, which includes Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Reece James. The club's interest in additional midfielders, such as Granit Xhaka, further signaled limited prospects for Santos.

Chelsea initially acquired Santos from Vasco da Gama in 2023 for £16 million. The club has now secured a significant profit, with the transfer fee structured at £48 million upfront, plus £2 million in achievable add-ons, and a 10% sell-on clause. This deal concludes Santos' three-year tenure with Chelsea.

During his time at Chelsea, Santos showed flashes of promise, including forward passes and a willingness to engage defensively. However, his season was marked by several notable errors that impacted the team's performance. One such incident occurred in September against Brighton, where a miscontrolled touch led to a defensive red card for teammate Trevoh Chalobah and a subsequent 3-1 defeat. Head coach Enzo Maresca expressed dissatisfaction following this match.

Santos' playing time became inconsistent under Maresca, with starts often reserved for less high-profile fixtures. Following Maresca's departure, Liam Rosenior, who had previously managed Santos at Strasbourg, took over. Initially, Santos saw more regular starts, with Rosenior describing him as tactically excellent. However, trust appeared to wane, particularly after a late defensive lapse by Santos in a match against Burnley, which resulted in a draw. Santos was an unused substitute in Rosenior's final two games.

Despite these challenges, Manchester United views Santos not as a finished product, but as a player with significant potential. The club is banking on providing him with consistent playing time to foster his development. Santos himself was keen to leave Chelsea, especially with the team facing a season without European competition, a stark contrast to his initial willingness to be an understudy during the club's Champions League participation.

Chelsea had previously rejected a £45 million offer from West Ham for Santos last summer, recognizing his potential. The club sanctioned his representatives to explore transfer options several weeks ago, leading to the agreement with Manchester United.
