Andrew Garfield Recalls Being 'Terrified' of Robert Redford on Set
The actor shared anecdotes about working with the legendary Robert Redford on the 2007 film 'Lions for Lambs.'
Andrew Garfield recounted his experience working with veteran actor and director Robert Redford on the 2007 film "Lions for Lambs," describing himself as "terrified" and nervous.
During an appearance on Amy Poehler's "Good Hang" podcast, Garfield shared that he was awestruck by Redford. "I don’t know what I was telling myself. So, first of all, Bob Redford, God rest his beautiful soul of service," Garfield said. "So, I say it with love. So, I’m terrified and nervous and pinching myself."
Garfield also noted that Redford, who directed "Lions for Lambs" as well as acted in it, had a reputation for being late to set.
"The 'Social Network' actor then claimed Redford showed up to set 'four hours late,'" Garfield recalled. "It’s just like by that time I’m just pissed. I’m just angry."
However, Garfield, 43, clarified that his frustration was tongue-in-cheek, adding that "a lot of the nerves had kind of dissipated." He described Redford as "loose and casual" and dressed in a way that made him seem younger than his years. "He was just on his own Redford time and he was famously late. I’m not like telling tales out of school. He was a famously late person."
Garfield further revealed that Redford was collaborative on set, often asking for his input on scenes he was directing and acting in.
"He would shoot his own coverage first. He would shoot himself and then he would look at me after his first take and he’d be like, ‘What do you think?’ ‘Cause he was directing as well," Garfield explained. "So all my scenes were with him and he was like, ‘What do you think?’ And I was like, ‘It’s great.'"
"Lions for Lambs" is a war drama that explores the connections between a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, a U.S. senator, a journalist, and a college professor in California.
Robert Redford died last September at the age of 89. His publicist confirmed his passing, stating he died at his home in Utah surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
