Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro Premiere 'Artificial' at London Film Festival
The couple, who play key figures in the OpenAI drama, attended the BFI London Film Festival for the premiere of their new film.
Andrew Garfield and his girlfriend Monica Barbaro stepped out together for the BFI London Film Festival premiere of their new film, "Artificial." The biographical comedy-drama, directed by Luca Guadagnino, centers on the controversial firing and rehiring of OpenAI founder Sam Altman in 2023.
Garfield, 43, portrays Altman in the film, while Barbaro, 36, plays Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer. Garfield appeared at the premiere with his signature long locks tucked behind his ears, opting for a brown open-collared shirt and a matching jacket. Barbaro donned a sparkling blue sequined dress paired with silver strappy heels.
The couple's relationship first garnered public attention in January of the previous year at W Magazine's Best Performances party in Los Angeles. Romance rumors intensified, and they were later reportedly seen together at Glastonbury and officially confirmed their relationship at Wimbledon.
Garfield is already being recognized for his performance in "Artificial," with critics noting his 'unsettling' portrayal of Altman. Following the film's New York premiere, social media buzz lauded Guadagnino's work as his "best in a decade" and praised its commentary on Silicon Valley culture.
Neon, the production company behind "Artificial," is campaigning for both Garfield and Mark Rylance to receive nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category at the upcoming Academy Awards. Reviews from critics have highlighted the film's intensity and Garfield's compelling performance.
Film writer Greg Pomes described "Artificial" as an "intimate character study but on a huge scale," adding that Garfield "fully becomes Sam Altman" and calling the film a potential sequel to "The Social Network." Similarly, Nicole's Film Perspectives tweeted that "Garfield unfolds into a terrifying role that left me floored," while Variety's Antonio Ferme noted that Garfield "nailed Sam Altman's charismatic yet manipulative demeanor."
