Andoni Iraola, the current manager of Liverpool, identifies his year playing for New York City FC (NYCFC) in 2015 as a pivotal period that significantly influenced his transition into coaching and shaped his tactical philosophy. Though his playing career spanned 14 years and over 500 appearances for Athletic Club, and included seven caps for Spain, Iraola views his stint in Major League Soccer as a critical first step into management.

During his time with NYCFC, owned by the City Football Group, Iraola played alongside prominent figures such as Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo, and David Villa. He was encouraged to invert from his traditional right-back position to a deep-lying midfielder when his team possessed the ball. This tactical shift, Iraola noted, broadened his understanding of the game and opened his eyes to its strategic dimensions. He explained that while as a full-back his focus was primarily on marking an opposing winger, the midfield role demanded a more comprehensive control and awareness of the entire pitch.

Iraola credited then-NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira for influencing his perspective. "We used to play almost like Manchester City," Iraola said in a 2024 interview. "I started to understand the positional game better, the possession-based football. They are tools I’ve used after. Patrick had discipline and structure. It definitely helped me a lot. In midfield you’ve got to be in touch with everyone."

Beyond the pitch, Iraola spent his days off exploring New York City, attending various sporting events including baseball, basketball, NFL, and ice hockey. He maintains an interest in fantasy football, a nod to his fascination with the NFL's tactical intricacies. He believes the strategic planning in the NFL, particularly concerning set-plays and exploiting space, offered valuable insights that he has since adapted to his coaching, albeit on a smaller scale with fewer set routines.

He and his wife, Itziar, also made a point of exploring different city neighborhoods and engaging in conversations with locals, which contributed to improving his English. The couple favored Williamsburg in Brooklyn for its dining options.

Upon Iraola's retirement from playing in November 2016 to embark on his coaching career, NYCFC's official website lauded his contributions. The club noted his "consistent excellence and selfless teamwork" on the field and his "humility and professionalism" off the pitch. Vieira described him as the "perfect image of a team player," and former teammate David Villa wished him well, stating, "He knows he’ll have a friend for the rest of his life in me."

Iraola has revisited New York City multiple times since his departure, including with AFC Bournemouth during previous pre-seasons. His return for Liverpool's summer tour signifies a moment to reflect on his journey from those experiences in the city to his current role as a manager.
