Analyst Warns Putin on Brink of 'Catastrophic Miscalculation' Triggering World War III

Vladimir Putin may be on the verge of a significant miscalculation that could escalate into a wider European conflict, potentially triggering NATO's Article 5 mutual defense clause and World War III, according to analyst Mark Almond.

Almond points to several developments suggesting Putin is preparing for further military action beyond Ukraine. He notes that Russia has reportedly ordered army generals to increase data collection on reservists and has proposed legislation to fine companies for failing to support the war effort or impede mobilization. Ukraine's President Zelensky previously warned of a Russian plan for a rapid mobilization of 300,000 men by the end of the year.

Border Tensions and NATO Concerns

Further fueling concerns, Russia's Federal Security Service has imposed movement restrictions, including a night-time curfew, in two areas along its border with Estonia, a NATO member. Reports also indicate fortification of the Narva River, which marks the border, suggesting preparations for a potential land invasion. Almond questions whether NATO allies would risk war with Russia over Estonia, a small country with a limited military.

Additionally, Belarus, a close Russian ally, recently conducted major military exercises near its borders with Poland and Lithuania, including tank battalions. These drills occurred near the strategically vital Suwalki Gap, a 25-mile stretch connecting Belarus to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Seizing this gap would cut off the Baltic states from mainland Europe, leaving them vulnerable.

Moscow allegedly flew a drone across the Gap into Kaliningrad earlier this month, apparently to survey NATO air defenses.

Allied Readiness and Political Divisions

Almond suggests that while former U.S. President Donald Trump has shown affinity for Putin, the current U.S. administration might be hesitant to engage in further European escalation, especially concerning perceived minor incursions into the Baltics. In contrast, French President Macron has been actively building consensus for a plan in the event of war between Europe and Russia.

However, Almond criticizes Britain's stance, suggesting a lack of concrete action on defense spending despite strong rhetoric. He notes that the British Army's troop numbers have significantly decreased since the end of the Cold War.

Hybrid Threats and Future Uncertainty

The analyst also raises the possibility of less direct forms of Russian aggression, such as cyber warfare, state-sponsored terrorism, false flag attacks, or disinformation campaigns, designed to weaken European alliances. Almond believes Putin may calculate that weakening NATO's resolve is an easier path than sustaining a direct, all-out war, citing the heavy casualties Russia has sustained in Ukraine.

The potential rise of far-right, Russophile parties in European elections, such as the AfD in Germany, is also seen as evidence of growing divisions within Europe regarding Russia.

Almond concludes that Putin is a risk-taker, and with a stalemate in Ukraine, he may be planning his next move, with the potential for a conflagration that could engulf the continent.
