Amy Shark's NRL Grand Final Performance Sparks Fan Backlash Over Past Criticism
Singer's return for Jai Arrow tribute divides fans who recall her sharp critique of the league.
Australian singer Amy Shark is facing fan criticism for her upcoming performance at the NRL Grand Final, with many recalling her previous sharp remarks about the sport. Shark is scheduled to perform a pre-match tribute to retired South Sydney Rabbitohs star Jai Arrow.
In April 2025, during an AFL event, Shark had publicly criticized the NRL, stating, "I'm from Queensland so unfortunately, I've had NRL pushed in front of me, which kind of sucks." She further added, "Actually you know what, screw them, honestly they just screw around artists, you guys actually understand artists."
These comments have resurfaced, leading some fans to question her inclusion in the Grand Final festivities. Social media users expressed their surprise and disappointment, with one writing, "How does Amy Shark get a start at any #NRL event again after she publicly s*** on the code at an AFL function?"
The NRL's entertainment booking process has been turbulent, with initial talks with Tones and I collapsing shortly before the event. Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys had initially considered canceling the entertainment before reversing the decision and promising a significant performance.
Shark's performance will accompany a lap of honor for Jai Arrow, who retired this year after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The participating musicians are reportedly donating their appearance fees to MND causes, a detail that has led some fans to defend Shark's involvement.
Shark has a history of supporting MND fundraising, having participated in FightMND's Big Freeze event earlier this year. Her connection to rugby league is also extensive; prior to her music career, she worked as a video producer for the Gold Coast Titans and performed at club events.
This marks a return to the NRL Grand Final stage for Shark, who previously performed in 2020. Her earlier involvement with the Gold Coast Titans highlights a long-standing relationship with the sport.
