Amy Shark Defends NRL Grand Final Performance Amid Criticism

Amy Shark has addressed criticism surrounding her upcoming performance at the 2026 NRL Grand Final, stating that she loves the sport and that the backlash is merely "noise." Her comments come after resurfaced remarks from April 2025, in which she criticized the NRL, calling it an event that "screws around artists."

Shark's inclusion in the 2026 Grand Final entertainment lineup sparked controversy, as fans recalled her previous critical statements made during an AFL Gather Round dinner. At that event, she told attendees, "I'm from Queensland so unfortunately, I've had NRL pushed in front of me, which kind of sucks... screw them, honestly they just screw around artists, you guys actually understand artists."

Despite the criticism, Shark posted a video on social media showing her wearing a Broncos jersey and celebrating the team's win at the 2025 NRL Grand Final. She captioned the video, "11 months ago. I love the game... don't believe the noise." This appears to be a direct response to fans questioning her involvement in the NRL event following her past remarks.

This year's Grand Final entertainment has seen a turbulent lead-up. Talks with artist Tones and I reportedly collapsed, leading to a temporary cancellation of entertainment before the decision was reversed. Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys promised a "big surprise" and "the highest-rating 11 minutes you will ever see."

Shark is slated to perform a pre-match tribute alongside members of The Screaming Jets, Grinspoon, Peking Duk, and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. The tribute is in honor of retired South Sydney Rabbitohs player Jai Arrow, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) earlier this year. The performers are reportedly donating their appearance fees to MND causes.

Some fans have defended Shark's participation, pointing to her charitable work and the reported donation of her fee. Shark has been a supporter of MND fundraising campaigns, participating in FightMND's Big Freeze 12 event in June. This performance will also mark her return to the NRL Grand Final stage, having previously performed in 2020.
