Amy Hunt, a British sprinter who recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with an English literature degree, has transitioned from academia to the elite level of athletics. Her performances, including a silver medal in the 200 meters at the World Athletics Championships, have garnered significant attention, with Hunt describing herself as "sexy and aggressive" and an "academic badass and a track goddess." This self-assured persona, she believes, has been key to her success.
Hunt, 24, is set to compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games. She acknowledges that the financial support for track and field athletes is not as substantial as in some other sports, but notes that their earnings are higher than in more niche Olympic disciplines. The sport is actively seeking ways to increase its profile, drawing parallels to Formula 1's surge in popularity following a documentary series. However, Hunt's training regimen, which includes time in Italy, often requires her to decline various opportunities such as fashion events or travel invitations.
"My feet and my ankles and my legs are my money-makers, essentially," Hunt stated, explaining why she avoids wearing high heels frequently. She detailed the physical challenges of sprinting, including toenail removal and blisters during competitions, emphasizing that the reality of the sport is far from just glamorous events. "It’s not all glamorous parties and holidays."
Despite the rigorous demands, Hunt finds joy in her life as an athlete, living in Italy and embracing her identity. She aims to be fluent in Italian to read 14th-century poetry by Giovanni Boccaccio. "I live the coolest life," she said, attributing her success to a "somewhat reckless optimism" and "radical confidence." She draws inspiration from athletes like Sha'Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles, as well as figures like Dua Lipa, for their strong sense of self and unapologetic confidence.
Hunt has recently broken the 11-second barrier for the 100m and successfully defended her British title. Her primary focus for the year includes the European Championships, but she is also eagerly anticipating the Commonwealth Games. "A gold medal at the Commonwealths would be unbelievably cool," she said, prioritizing medals over personal best times. Hunt harbors ambitions for multiple Olympic golds and world titles, stating, "I want to win multiple Olympic golds, I want to win world titles and I don’t feel like I should be ashamed to say that." She believes that self-belief is paramount for achieving these goals, concluding, "I have to be my biggest cheerleader and it excites me. I love the journey I’m on towards that Olympic gold."
