Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden celebrated three years since undergoing treatment for breast cancer with a trip to Ibiza. The dancer, 35, shared photos on Instagram from her holiday, reflecting on her journey.
Dowden was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023. She underwent a mastectomy and, after being given the all-clear in February 2024, continued with monthly chemotherapy sessions to maintain remission. She described the treatment period as "terrifying."
"Three years ago today, I had just recently just my breast removed and was currently undergoing fertility treatment before starting chemotherapy... I was terrified, not only of the treatment itself, but of being thrown into a forced menopause because my cancer is hormone-fed," Dowden wrote in her Instagram caption. "Fast forward exactly three years, and my perspective on life has completely changed... I live each day to the fullest, with so much gratitude for the little things I once took for granted. I know how lucky I am, and I never lose sight of that. Every day is a gift, and I’m determined to make the most of it."
She captioned her holiday pictures, which showed her in a bikini by an infinity pool, with the hashtags #BreastCancerSurvivor, #CancerJourney, #Gratitude, #Livelifetothefull, and #grateful.
In November, Dowden had two mastectomies. Following the surgery, she shared a selfie and expressed pride in her recovery, stating she was focusing on "little things" and "celebrating the small wins." She noted improvements in her movement and a return to feeling like herself. Dowden also shared that she had been doing some shopping to find comfortable clothing after surgery, as her "lovely dresses" were no longer suitable and her surgical bra was visible with certain outfits.
Dowden has been open about her cancer journey, encouraging others to check themselves. She mentioned that her recovery is progressing, with increased energy and reduced tenderness, and she looks forward to resuming physiotherapy and returning to dancing when she feels well enough.
