Amol Rajan's New Podcast Launch Draws Scrutiny for Low Viewership and Familiar Format

Amol Rajan, formerly of Radio 4, has launched his new media venture, 'The Amol Rajan Connection,' with its inaugural podcast episode featuring an interview with Sir Gareth Southgate. However, the debut has been met with criticism regarding low viewing figures and a perceived lack of originality in its content and presentation.

Rajan, who departed his £250,000-a-year role at the BBC last month, promoted his new website and accompanying YouTube channel extensively, including through social media. The first episode, a two-hour interview with Southgate, has garnered attention not for its groundbreaking content, but for its low engagement metrics. The promotional post for the episode on X (formerly Twitter) reportedly received only two likes, and the episode itself had garnered 750 views after three hours.

The podcast's studio setup is described as a near replica of existing successful podcasts, featuring low seats, curated 'homeware,' and microphones to create an intimate atmosphere. Rajan himself is depicted in a velvet chair, wearing a distinctive outfit and his signature two watches. The interview format utilizes a common technique of presenting sensational 'revelations' as short cliffhangers, a method noted to be widely adopted by other podcasters, such as Steven Bartlett's 'Diary of A CEO.'

The choice of guest, Sir Gareth Southgate, while prominent, was also flagged as unoriginal, given Southgate's prior appearances on multiple podcasts, including 'The Rest Is Politics: Leading' and 'The High Performance' podcast. The interview covered familiar ground, including Southgate's reflections on missing a penalty in Euro 96, leadership, and his childhood. A minor revelation from the interview was Southgate's assertion that a return to Premier League management would be 'unlikely' after his resignation as England manager following the 2024 Euro finals loss to Spain.

Rajan also used the interview to draw parallels between his own experiences and Southgate's, discussing his own disappointment at being dropped from a cricket squad at age 17 and how it motivated him. He suggested a similar letter received by Southgate at age 13, which led to his departure from Southampton FC, had a comparable impact on the former England manager.

The venture has secured partnerships with brands such as Amazon, NatWest, Google Cloud, and Waitrose. However, Rajan's announcement of the Amazon partnership on Instagram previously drew criticism from environmental advocates. Calls to boycott his show were also reported, though the initial viewership figures suggest this may not have been widely heeded.

This launch follows Rajan's brief appearance on 'Celebrity Traitors,' where he was the first contestant eliminated in the second episode, a stark contrast to the show's significant audience of 14 million. The review questions the long-term viability of 'The Amol Rajan Connection' in a crowded podcasting market, particularly for those who have paid up to £999 for a lifetime subscription.
