Amol Rajan's Early Exit from Celebrity Traitors May Jeopardize Social Media Ambitions

Amol Rajan's ambition to build a social media empire may have been significantly hampered by his premature elimination from the reality show "Celebrity Traitors." Rajan, who left his £320,000-a-year role as presenter of Radio 4's "Today" programme, had reportedly envisioned the show as a stepping stone to becoming a prominent YouTuber.

Sources close to Rajan expressed concerns that his status as the first celebrity to be "murdered" on the show, after traitors Richard E. Grant and Maya Jama recruited comedian James Acaster over him, could be a "disaster" for his new venture. The strategy of remaining on "Traitors" for as long as possible was a key component of his plan to transition into a solo online career.

Rajan, 43, is already seeking subscriptions for his new website, The Amol Rajan Connection, and its accompanying YouTube channel, with lifetime memberships priced up to £999. These higher-tier subscriptions, including a "Pina Colada" package, promise access to exclusive events. He is reportedly targeting a younger audience than that of "Today" listeners, utilizing platforms like TikTok for promotion.

"It was all perfectly lined up by Amol, who is a very clever guy who doesn't miss a trick," an associate of the "University Challenge" host commented. "He signed for "Traitors", left the BBC and started putting his YouTube project out there. It should have all been so good but he lasted just one episode. It has screwed the plan and it is devastating for him."

In addition to his online content ambitions, Rajan has also trademarked his name for a range of potential products, including eyewear and kitchenware. He has also announced a "strategic partnership" with Waitrose, with new content planned for various social media platforms focusing on sustainability, quality, and British farming.

Following his early exit from "Celebrity Traitors," Rajan described the experience as "gutting" and that he was "grieving." He spoke to his former colleague Simon Jack on "Today," insisting that multiple participants were suspicious of Richard E. Grant, which ultimately led to Rajan's elimination. Rajan contended that the show's editing made it appear as though he was Grant's primary adversary.

"There were lots of people who were having a go at Richard as you can imagine," Rajan stated. "We all had a go at him because he said he was a traitor which has never happened before and a completely ludicrous thing to do. So it wasn't just me doing it. There were other people asking hard questions too but my strategy got me this close to becoming a traitor which I'd have loved."

Rajan also revealed that he had since had lunch with Grant, who reportedly apologized for his decision, stating he had "gone completely mad." Rajan also commented that comedians on the show have an advantage due to pre-existing relationships, noting that Rob and Romesh know each other well and are adept at reading familiar individuals.
