Amol Rajan's Early Exit from "Celebrity Traitors" Could Derail Social Media Ambitions

Amol Rajan's bid for social media success appears to have hit an early snag after his swift elimination from the reality show "Celebrity Traitors." Rajan, who left his £320,000-a-year role as presenter of Radio 4's "Today" program, had reportedly viewed his participation in the show as a crucial step in his ambition to become a prominent YouTuber.

Sources close to Rajan suggest his early departure, becoming the first celebrity to be "murdered" in the game after traitors Richard E. Grant and Maya Jama recruited comedian James Acaster instead of him, could be a significant setback for his new venture. Rajan is currently seeking subscribers for his website, "The Amol Rajan Connection," and its associated YouTube channel, with lifetime memberships priced up to £999.

"It was all perfectly lined up by Amol, who is a very clever guy who doesn't miss a trick," an associate of the "University Challenge" host commented. "He signed for Traitors, left the BBC and started putting his YouTube project out there. It should have all been so good but he lasted just one episode. It has screwed the plan and it is devastating for him."

Beyond his online presence, Rajan has also taken steps to trademark his name for a range of merchandise, including eyewear and kitchenware. He has also announced a "strategic partnership" with Waitrose, with plans to focus on content related to sustainability, quality, and British farming across various social media platforms.

Rajan, previously the editor of The Independent newspaper, has expressed his disappointment over his early exit from "Celebrity Traitors." He described the experience as "gutting" and admitted to "grieving" his departure. Speaking on his former colleague Simon Jack's "Today" program, Rajan indicated that the show's editing may have unfairly portrayed him as the primary challenger to actor Richard E. Grant.

"There were lots of people who were having a go at Richard as you can imagine," Rajan stated, referencing Grant's decision to reveal he was a traitor. He added that comedians on the show might have an advantage due to their familiarity with each other, noting, "Rob and Romesh know one another very well. They are better at reading the other people if they know them well."

Rajan also revealed he had since met with Grant, who reportedly apologized for his actions during the show, admitting he had "gone completely mad."
