Amol Rajan Mocked on TV Return for Early 'Celebrity Traitors' Exit
The journalist's stint on the BBC gameshow was a running joke on 'Have I Got News For You,' where he hosted.
Amol Rajan faced mockery over his swift elimination from "Celebrity Traitors" upon his return to television hosting duties on "Have I Got News For You" (HIGNFY).
Rajan, 43, was the first contestant to be eliminated from "Celebrity Traitors" after losing a head-to-head challenge against comedian James Acaster. His brief appearance on the show became a recurring gag during his HIGNFY hosting debut.
The episode opened with panelist Phil Wang mockingly spelling Rajan's name as "Ahmoll" at a mock Round Table, referencing a common in-show joke about contestants correctly spelling each other's names. Rajan initially appeared confused, only realizing it was a joke when Wang explained its origin from the show. This prompted Rajan to bury his head in his hands, with team captain Ian Hislop quipping that Rajan likely wouldn't recall the show's mechanics given his five-minute appearance.
Rajan admitted that he had planned to avoid being an "awkward" journalist and to play the game strategically to prevent an early exit. He expressed regret over his game play, stating, "I played the wrong game." He added that he wished he had been selected as a Traitor, believing his experience as a Faithful would have made him a more effective Traitor.
Following his elimination, Rajan described the experience as an "unforgettable ride of a lifetime" but acknowledged he was "grieving what might have been." He indicated that he would eventually view the experience as a significant privilege.
Rajan's early exit from "Celebrity Traitors" is particularly disappointing as it conflicts with his broader career aspirations, including plans to become a prominent YouTuber after leaving his £320,000-a-year role at BBC Radio 4's "Today" program. Sources suggested that his quick departure could be a setback for his new venture.
He is actively promoting his new website, "The Amol Rajan Connection," and its accompanying YouTube channel, offering lifetime memberships up to £999. Rajan aims to attract a younger audience than "Today" listeners and is utilizing platforms like TikTok for promotion.
Associates of Rajan describe him as a shrewd individual whose career transition and "Traitors" appearance were meticulously planned. However, his short run on the show has reportedly disrupted these plans, leading some who have worked with him to find amusement in his swift elimination.
In addition to his digital content ventures, Rajan has trademarked his name for potential merchandise, including eyewear and kitchenware. He has also announced a "strategic partnership" with Waitrose, focusing on content related to sustainability, quality, and British farming.
