Many Americans are looking to take a last-minute vacation before summer concludes, with a substantial number reporting they have not yet taken a trip this season. A survey of 2,000 Americans commissioned by CheapCaribbean Vacations found that nearly one in four respondents, 23%, feel they have not fully experienced summer.

According to the research, conducted by Talker Research, 61% of Americans have not taken a vacation so far this summer, and 59% believe they haven't had sufficient vacation time. These figures suggest a strong desire among many to still create memorable summer experiences.

When asked to characterize the summer season, 13% of participants indicated a lengthy to-do list remains, while another 13% cited financial pressures as a reason for altered summer plans. A similar percentage, 11%, expressed hope to fit in one more trip before the season ends.

Social Media's Influence on Travel Decisions

The survey revealed that two-thirds of Americans (67%) stated that social media influences their desire for travel, prompting last-minute searches. Specifically, 38% reported regularly or constantly feeling the urge to travel due to social media content. This influence appears to translate into action, with 43% of Americans booking vacations within two weeks of departure, highlighting the prevalence of spontaneous travel as a means to salvage summer vacation plans.

Eight percent of respondents search for last-minute travel deals daily, while 24% check at least weekly. In total, one-third (34%) search for last-minute deals a few times each month.

Price is a significant factor for those embracing last-minute travel planning. Over one-third (36%) indicated that a compelling deal would motivate them to book a last-minute getaway. Other motivations include making summer feel more exciting (24%) and fostering a sense of spontaneity (22%).

Financial Benefits of Last-Minute Bookings

For those who have previously booked last-minute trips, the wait often proved financially rewarding. Respondents estimated an average savings of $785 by booking closer to their departure date, with 21% reporting savings between $250 and $499. Dana Studebaker, Vice President of Marketing at CheapCaribbean Vacations, noted that last-minute travel offers an opportunity for "incredible value while making the most of the vacation season."

Looking forward, finding good value remains the primary incentive for booking subsequent trips. A quarter of respondents (25%) identified a great travel deal as the most likely motivator for a last-minute booking, followed by family invitations (24%), favorable weather forecasts (20%), and extended weekends (19%).

Beach destinations are the most sought-after for last-minute vacations, followed by national parks (31%), major cities (30%), and tropical locations (25%). Despite the feeling that summer is passing quickly, a majority of Americans remain optimistic about maximizing the remaining weeks, particularly if attractive travel opportunities arise.

The survey was conducted online by Talker Research between July 7-10, 2026, surveying 2,000 Americans with internet access.
