American Woman Finds Love at Irish Matchmaking Festival, Launches Travel Venture

Mary Timby, a self-described planner from Colorado, booked a trip to Ireland on a whim last summer, exhausted by the local dating scene and navigating a career transition. Her spontaneous decision led her to the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, a month-long celebration in County Clare, and ultimately to finding love with an Irishman named Jason Mangan.

Timby, 39, had recalled a comedy series mentioning an Irish matchmaking festival and discovered the Lisdoonvarna event was taking place during her planned visit. What began as an uncharacteristic last-minute decision has resulted in a viral social media story, a transatlantic romance, and a new business venture aimed at helping others find similar success.

"It's really about enjoying County Clare, enjoying the festival, and, if you meet someone, you do - and that's what happened with us," Timby said, speaking from a coastal cottage in County Clare with Mangan. Their meeting occurred at a pub called The Matchmaker.

Timby's trip gained unexpected attention when a video she posted on the plane about her spontaneous journey to the festival went viral on TikTok before she even landed. Upon arriving at Shannon Airport, she found her phone buzzing with notifications from friends alerting her to the video's popularity.

She drove through County Clare to her accommodation and then headed to Lisdoonvarna. The festival, which has roots stretching back 170 years when bachelor farmers and visitors would flock to the spa town, has evolved significantly. While fewer than 1,000 residents live in Lisdoonvarna year-round, the population swells to as many as 80,000 each September with international visitors. Although third-generation matchmaker Willie Daly still participates, the contemporary festival is characterized by its lively town-wide celebration of conversation and dancing.

Timby's first evening in Lisdoonvarna was quiet, but she returned the following night after encouragement from her AirBnB host. It was then that Mangan, 38, approached her at The Matchmaker Bar. "Conversation just flowed," Mangan recalled. Although their initial interaction was brief as Mangan had to drive friends, he later found Timby on Instagram and invited her out.

This led to a series of dates, and Timby extended her stay in Ireland. The couple kept their developing romance private initially, only sharing their relationship publicly on New Year's Eve after Timby returned to Colorado and Mangan visited her for Thanksgiving. The announcement was met with excitement from their followers.

Their story garnered attention from local Irish businesses and tourist destinations. Timby, a communications consultant, was approached by Lisdoonvarna locals to become an ambassador for the festival. "So I said: Sign me up. I love the festival. It brought me Jay," she said.

Inspired by the numerous messages from followers hoping to replicate her success, Timby partnered with Met Through Friends, a company that organizes real-life meetups. They launched an interest form for a trip to the festival, which received 560 responses, far exceeding their initial expectation of 80 to 100. The first group of eight travelers is scheduled to visit later this month, with Mangan contributing to the itinerary.

"You can go on all these apps, swipe left, swipe right, but it's not actually going out and making a connection with someone and experiencing a small little town in Ireland, experiencing the culture," Mangan said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience... you never know."

Timby echoed his sentiment, advising, "Put your phone down and put yourselves out there, and good things will come."
