An American couple's vacation experience in Venice, Italy, took an unexpected turn when they learned that jogging shirtless in the city could lead to a fine.

The incident, documented in a viral video posted to Instagram, showed the couple jogging through the city. The woman stated in the video that they noticed locals reacting negatively and eventually discovered it was against the law to run shirtless in Venice. "Sorry, Venetian people, we didn't know," the tourist said.

Eric Bowman, editor-in-chief of TravelPulse, told Fox News Digital that Venice is one of many European vacation spots that have implemented lesser-known rules to manage the influx of tourists. These restrictions aim to maintain order and discourage disruptive behavior.

Bowman noted that friction often arises between locals and tourists due to "drunken debauchery," general rudeness, and a lack of understanding of local customs. Clothing choices can also lead to penalties, with some destinations prohibiting swimwear away from beaches.

He advised travelers in Italy to wear swimwear only at the beach and to dress modestly when walking around towns. "It's not California, unfortunately," Bowman remarked.

Beyond dress codes, other specific local rules include restrictions on wearing high heels at ancient ruins in Greece and prohibitions on camouflage clothing in some Caribbean nations. Bowman suggested that popular destinations have increasingly introduced various bans and fees to manage visitor impact.

To navigate these complex local regulations, Bowman recommended booking with a travel adviser. Such professionals can inform travelers about local rules and restrictions before their trip, potentially saving them from fines. He added that the cost of a travel adviser may be offset by avoiding penalties, and that some advisers charge fees while others do not.
