A New York-based editor's vacation in Sicily was disrupted when volcanic activity from Mount Etna caused widespread flight cancellations at Catania International Airport, leaving her and thousands of other travelers scrambling for alternative routes home during the busy summer season. Julie Sagoskin, editor-in-chief of Park Magazine, arrived in Sicily on August 1 and planned to depart on August 10. Upon arriving at the airport, her flight was canceled due to the ongoing eruption.

Sagoskin described the scene at the airport as "total chaos." Friends who were scheduled to fly out two days earlier had also experienced cancellations and returned to stay with her group. Faced with uncertainty and the prospect of being stranded in a foreign country amidst a natural event, Sagoskin weighed her options: wait for flights to resume or find another way off the island.

Between August 6 and August 12, more than a third of the 1,974 scheduled flights at Catania's airport were canceled, affecting thousands of travelers. Some passengers reportedly spent days waiting for a way to leave.

Sagoskin decided to travel to Rome, hoping for better flight availability. She booked an approximately 11-hour overnight train from Catania to Rome, noting that seats were quickly filling up. The journey involved a ferry crossing and periods without air conditioning. She finally departed from Rome on August 11, one day after her original planned return date.

Other members of her group sought different solutions, traveling through Palermo or dealing with further cancellations, overnight stays, and lost luggage. Sagoskin emphasized the importance of flexibility and making a plan and sticking to it.

During the ordeal, Sagoskin observed ash around the hotel near the airport, and guests were temporarily asked to leave the pool area. Despite the travel disruptions, Sagoskin stated that the experience did not overshadow her overall positive time in Sicily, calling it "memorable" and a "trip upon a trip." She concluded that the experience reinforced the importance of flexibility and preparedness when facing unexpected life events.
