American Tourist Claims French Big Mac is "Little Mac," Ignites "Shrinkflation" Debate

An American traveler's complaint about the size of a Big Mac purchased in France has sparked an online debate about fast-food portion sizes, with many comparing the experience to "shrinkflation." The tourist shared their experience on Reddit, posting a photo of the burger under the title "Big Mac is now Little Mac."

In the post, the user stated they paid €6.40 (approximately $7.13 USD) for a Big Mac in France that appeared to be smaller than a McChicken. The traveler explained their practice of comparing McDonald's offerings in different countries during their international trips, noting that this experience has likely concluded their "try out McDonald's" tour abroad.

The Reddit post quickly garnered numerous comments. Some users speculated about the size of the poster's hands, while others debated the quality of American fast food compared to international versions. Many commenters expressed sympathy, with one noting that "6.40 euros is robbery for such a disappointing product." Other reactions included humorous remarks about the perceived shrinking size of fast food portions.

Official nutritional information indicates a slight difference between a Big Mac in the United States and one in France. An American Big Mac typically contains 580 calories, 45 grams of carbohydrates, and 34 grams of fat. In contrast, the French version is listed with 530 calories, 42 grams of carbohydrates, and 27 grams of fat.

This incident follows other recent complaints about fast-food portion sizes. Earlier this year, a McDonald's customer on Reddit shared a photo of a small soda, comparing its size to a plastic cup and questioning the value for money. Similarly, Chick-fil-A faced accusations of shrinking its Deluxe Sandwich, with a Reddit user providing comparative photos from different years.

Data from 2024 indicated that McDonald's had increased its menu prices by over 100% in the preceding decade, a rate more than triple that of U.S. inflation. Noteworthy price hikes included an $18 Big Mac meal in Connecticut, a $7.29 Egg McMuffin, and $5.69 for a side of hash browns.
