A 22-year-old woman identified only by her surname, Ortiz, has been arrested in connection with the death of 74-year-old American businessman Marc Fleming. Fleming, a U.S. citizen from California, was discovered dead on September 27 in his sixth-floor apartment in Playas del Coco, a popular beach resort town on Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast.

Officials believe Fleming sustained multiple head injuries, possibly inflicted with a glass blender jar, according to The Tico Times. Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency, the nation's equivalent of the FBI, launched a manhunt for the suspect after releasing surveillance footage that they allege shows Ortiz near the scene around the time of the killing.

The footage depicted a woman in a white bra and denim shorts walking with another woman. Authorities identified this woman as Ortiz and arrested her on Tuesday at a residence in San Felipe de Alajuelita following confidential tips. The second woman, identified as Zeledón, was also arrested for allegedly assisting Ortiz in traveling to San José after the incident.

According to Deputy Director Vladimir Muñoz, Fleming met Ortiz online and picked her up before driving to his apartment. A confrontation allegedly ensued, during which Ortiz struck Fleming, causing the fatal injuries. Police stated that Ortiz remained in the apartment for approximately two hours before leaving on foot, allegedly with Fleming's bank cards.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows Ortiz shortly after 5 p.m. that day, appearing agitated while waiting for an elevator, checking her phone, and pacing. Further video from businesses in the resort town allegedly captured Ortiz meeting Zeledón, and the pair visiting an ATM and several businesses where Fleming's bank cards were used.

Zeledón is also believed to have recruited individuals for paid companion services. Authorities had previously searched Ortiz's home in La Capri de Desamparados but she had already left. She remained at large until her arrest this week. No charges have yet been formally announced against either woman.

Fleming had purchased the Costa Rican apartment in March, having previously built a career in the U.S. where he held the position of vice president at a company manufacturing industrial parts for truck bodies and trailers.
