Colleen Bankston, a fitness influencer from Georgia, US, has detailed a sophisticated luggage theft that occurred outside London's St Pancras International railway station. Bankston and her husband were loading their luggage into an Uber on a Sunday morning when the incident took place. She believes at least three individuals were involved in the theft, with one appearing to communicate with others via a headset.
The 62-year-old said her Louis Vuitton suitcase, valued at over £2,600, contained a significant amount of cash, designer handbags, and sentimental jewelry. As she prepared to place the suitcase into the Uber, a stranger approached the couple with a seemingly disarming question about their destination and if he could join them. Seconds later, Bankston realized her suitcase was gone.
Footage captured by a bystander shows a man engaging Bankston and her husband in conversation while another individual circles the group and a third person seizes the suitcase. The thief then quickly disappeared into the station with the bag. The bystander reportedly told Bankston that he had observed the same group operating in the area on multiple occasions.
"I'm devastated," Bankston stated, adding that she felt such an incident would not have happened in America. "There were three of them right there; the one guy came up while the Uber driver was loading our luggage up [...] and asked my husband what I thought was a very stupid question."
Following the theft, Bankston and her husband immediately went to the airport and returned to the US. She expressed ongoing distress, particularly over the loss of sentimental jewelry gifted by her husband 35 years prior. Bankston emphasized her usual vigilance with her belongings, noting she had just lowered the handle of her suitcase to take it into the car herself when it was snatched.
The thieves were reportedly wearing baseball caps and headphones, a tactic sometimes used to appear as ordinary commuters. The method of approaching a target under the guise of asking for a ride is a known tactic employed by organized theft rings, with other social media reports suggesting similar incidents have occurred at St Pancras.
The British Transport Police were aware of the incident and had passed the investigation to the Metropolitan Police. An appeal for information was issued, requesting anyone with details to contact British Transport Police, quoting reference 447 of September 1.
