American Idol Singer Caleb Flynn Convicted of Wife's Murder

Caleb Flynn, 40, a former contestant on American Idol, has been found guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley, who he shot while she slept in their marital bed on February 16, 2026. The verdict came after two and a half hours of jury deliberation in the Miami County courthouse.

Flynn's bond was revoked, and he was taken into custody, awaiting sentencing on October 5. He faces a potential life sentence without parole. Prosecutors argued that Flynn, a former worship pastor, staged a burglary at their Tipp City, Ohio, home to cover up the crime. The couple's two daughters, then aged nine and 11, were reportedly home at the time of the murder.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of Flynn's affair with Alleigha Botner, a 24-year-old worship leader at his church. Botner testified that Flynn had expressed hatred for his wife and spoke of killing her. Their relationship, which began in early 2024, reportedly involved more than 100,000 text messages over 18 months. Botner shared some of these messages, in which Flynn allegedly discussed his desire to leave his marriage but also expressed concerns about losing custody of his daughters, his job at his wife's family's business, and his church position.

Prosecutors revealed text messages in which Flynn appeared to weigh his options, listing his daughters, his salary, his home, and his church position as potential sacrifices to be with Botner. One message from Flynn to Botner read, "I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail." Botner responded by telling him not to kill Ashley but suggested that a divorce "would change everything."

On the night before Ashley's death, Botner sent Flynn research on divorce proceedings and custody, as well as information on how Ashley could prove his infidelity. Flynn's final message to Botner that night was, "Good night, tomorrow's a big day. I've got to get to bed. I choose you, I'm about to be free."

Botner testified that she became suspicious when she learned of Ashley's death the next morning, messaging Flynn, "Caleb, what's going on? Were you involved? Is this real?" She later deleted the message out of fear of investigators discovering their affair. Botner admitted that the timing seemed too coincidental.

Flynn maintained his innocence, claiming an intruder killed his wife while he slept in another room with their daughters. His defense team argued that investigators rushed to judgment and that publicity surrounding the affair clouded the evidence. His attorney stated that no gun or evidence of Flynn firing a weapon was found and that infidelity does not equate to murder.

Flynn previously appeared on American Idol in 2013, where his wife reportedly encouraged him to pursue his musical aspirations. He did not advance beyond the initial audition rounds.
