American Idol Singer Accused of Murdering Wife, Texts to Mistress Revealed

Prosecutors allege that Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant and music pastor, murdered his wife Ashley in February 2023 and staged the scene to look like a break-in. His mistress, Alleigha Botner, 24, testified in court, recounting chilling text messages exchanged with Flynn, 40, that prosecutors claim reveal his motive.

Botner told jurors that she repeatedly urged Flynn to leave his wife, Ashley. In one message from September 2025, Botner stated, "The only way is having your girls half the time." She added, "If you want your girls full freakin' time, you can never have me ever again and you have chosen that so I have to release you and let you go."

Flynn has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, maintaining that an intruder killed his wife while he was sleeping in another room with their two daughters. His defense team argues that publicity surrounding his affair has unfairly influenced the evidence against him.

However, prosecutors have focused on Flynn's relationship with Botner as a key element of their case. Over an approximately 18-month affair, the two exchanged over 100,000 messages. In one message from September 2025, Flynn listed what he was prepared to sacrifice to be with Botner, including his "daughters, a quarter-million-dollar salary job, a place to live, possibly a church I serve at, public shame and humiliation, and way more."

Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022 at Christian Life Center in Dayton, where she was an intern and he was in his mid-30s. Their romantic relationship began in early 2024. As the affair intensified, prosecutors presented messages that suggested a darker turn in their conversations.

Botner tearfully read messages aloud in court, including one where she wrote to Flynn, "I want to kill her, Caleb. It's so bad." Flynn allegedly replied, "That makes two of us." Botner later testified that she did not mean it. Another exchange showed Flynn allegedly telling Botner, "Please hire someone to take douche out. I need you," referring to Ashley with a derogatory nickname.

In August 2025, Flynn allegedly wrote to Botner that he had spent the night contemplating ways to kill his wife without going to jail. Botner responded by telling him not to kill Ashley, but that a divorce would "change everything." Flynn allegedly replied, "I'll work on getting rid of her. Until then, I love you."

On the night before Ashley's death, Botner sent Flynn information she had researched about divorce, custody, and deleting messages. Flynn sent his last message to Botner shortly before midnight, stating, “Good night, tomorrow's a big day. I've got to get to bed. I choose you, I'm about to be free.”

The morning after Ashley was found dead, Botner messaged Flynn, "Caleb, what's going on? Were you involved? Is this real?" She later deleted the message out of fear of investigators discovering their affair. Upon learning of Ashley's death, Botner testified her "heart started pounding," finding the timing "too much of a coincidence."

During the trial, love songs that Flynn allegedly wrote for Botner were played for the jury, with some lyrics including, "So here's to the third, and the us that we lost" and "Know that you still own every piece of my soul." Flynn appeared visibly distressed as the songs were played, while Ashley's family members struggled to contain their reactions.

Botner testified that the last time she saw Flynn before the trial was at Ashley's parents' home hours after the killing. She claims Flynn's first words to her were, "It didn't happen the way we thought it would, did it?"

Initially, Botner told the FBI she did not believe Flynn had murdered his wife. However, she later changed her stance, describing Ashley's death as "way too much of a coincidence." When asked in court about her current feelings toward Flynn, she stated, "I hate him."

Flynn is also charged with tampering with evidence and intimidating a witness. The murder weapon has not been recovered. The trial is scheduled to continue.
