American Idol Pastor's Wife Murder Trial: Disturbing Photo Emerges

A disturbing photo showing Ashley Flynn with her husband Caleb's face scratched out was found on her phone weeks before she was shot and killed, according to evidence presented in the murder trial of the former American Idol contestant and music pastor. The photo was reportedly saved on February 2, just over two weeks before Ashley, 37, was found dead in her Tipp City, Ohio, home on February 16.

Caleb Flynn, 40, is facing life in prison without parole for the murder. Prosecutors allege he killed his wife to pursue a relationship with his 24-year-old mistress, Alleigha Botner, and then staged the home to appear as if a break-in had occurred.

Flynn has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that he was asleep in another room with their daughters when an intruder fatally shot his wife. His defense team argues that publicity surrounding his alleged affair has unfairly influenced the investigation and that authorities made a premature judgment.

Closing arguments were scheduled for Tuesday morning after prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss misdemeanor intimidation charges, as both the prosecution and defense rested their cases on Monday.

Flynn called 911 on the morning of February 16, reporting that an intruder had broken into his home and shot his wife. Responding officers found Ashley deceased from two gunshot wounds to the back of her head. Flynn initially told investigators he heard the shot while in his daughters' room and discovered the garage-side door ajar, suggesting an intruder's entry. However, authorities found no evidence of an intruder fleeing the scene, and the damage to the door was deemed inconsistent with a typical break-in.

Investigators also noted that the center console of Flynn's truck, where he claimed his handgun was stored, was found open upon their arrival.

During questioning, Flynn initially denied any marital problems. However, authorities soon uncovered his months-long affair with Botner, who had reportedly issued ultimatums for him to leave Ashley. Jurors heard testimony that the couple exchanged over 100,000 messages during their roughly 18-month affair. In one message from September 2025, Flynn allegedly listed his willingness to risk his daughters, his salary, his home, his church position, and public shame to be with Botner.

Botner testified that she met Flynn, who was in his mid-30s, in 2022 while she was an intern at Christian Life Center in Dayton. Their relationship turned romantic in early 2024. According to prosecutors, the relationship reached a critical point the night before Ashley's death. Botner sent Flynn information on divorce proceedings, child custody, and message deletion, along with details on how Ashley could prove his infidelity.

Flynn's final message to Botner before Ashley's death read: 'Good night, tomorrow's a big day. I've got to get to bed. I choose you, I'm about to be free.' Botner testified that she was alarmed by the timing and messaged Flynn, asking if he was involved. She later deleted the message out of fear of investigators discovering their affair. Upon learning of Ashley's death, Botner said her heart pounded, considering the timing too coincidental with Flynn's stated intention to divorce his wife.
